The following is notes and tips I've applied recently in my successful job search. Mindset via Podcast In 2013 I was lacking in a social life and had trouble adapting to a new country and new dynamic as a father. I simply went onto iTunes top ten podcast and stumbled upon the School of Greatness by Lewis Howes and The One You Feed. These two podcast substituted for my lack of community, and provided refined mindset and positivity to keep a sustainable attitude. If you are the average of your 5 closest friends, you can also mold your mindset to be the average of the 5 podcast you listened to. The people in my group may repeat themselves and keep it cheery, but who wants a Chicken Little. Trust me I’ve worked with a Chicken Little, once that’s shit is airborn it changes direction and comes your way, and that’s an itch you don’t want to scratch. Standout 2.0 I picked this up at Dubai airport on a lark, and this book had a great impact on my growth. There was a colleagu...
I think the trick to focus is, meditation and journaling. Morning journal (tim ferriss). And a weekly review GTD.
If you know how to clear your head, and practice recalling events in your day, you will be ever so present, your brain will train itself to find the path of least resistance. I think its true, your mind is a muscle which gets stronger over time. So there has to way to incrementally improve your focus. Pomodoro is probably a great start. 25 minutes, with a 5-minute break. What I like as well if you get in this way of thinking you can pull a Hemingway, train your brain to pick up a task where you left off. But when I say Pomodoro, I mean Uninterrupted. When you changed tasks, it takes on average 15 minutes to regain your concentration. Good luck making it through 25 minutes if you an interruption comes up.
I actually like the example of people catching up on emails while flying. Why can’t we set up this scenario on the ground? BLOCKED out a 2-hour chunk of time, no emails, no phone and no disruption from colleagues, possibly in a closed meeting room. BUT, 2 hours would be my max, with Pomodoro sprinkled in between.
If you manage 2 hours, its time to give the parasympathetic system a break. Walk, connect with nature, but get off the computer. Your brain and body need to recalibrate, which gets an extra boost from Water and Meditation. But much in the matter of flow, what are things you can tell yourself mentally to get back into your focused state. Can you create a checklist? A 3, 2, 1 scenario. Oh, shoot I'm distracted. 3. Drink water, 2. Focus on the webcam for 5 seconds, 3. Ask myself what do I want to have accomplished 5 minutes from now. Blast OFF. If you get fatigued and don’t have time to get up move around, then look out the window and focus on an object off in the distance, this can also engage your parasympathetic nervous system. For airplane mode, I wrote down 2 awesome hours, packed with deliberate practice and discipline.
