The following is notes and tips I've applied recently in my successful job search. Mindset via Podcast In 2013 I was lacking in a social life and had trouble adapting to a new country and new dynamic as a father. I simply went onto iTunes top ten podcast and stumbled upon the School of Greatness by Lewis Howes and The One You Feed. These two podcast substituted for my lack of community, and provided refined mindset and positivity to keep a sustainable attitude. If you are the average of your 5 closest friends, you can also mold your mindset to be the average of the 5 podcast you listened to. The people in my group may repeat themselves and keep it cheery, but who wants a Chicken Little. Trust me I’ve worked with a Chicken Little, once that’s shit is airborn it changes direction and comes your way, and that’s an itch you don’t want to scratch. Standout 2.0 I picked this up at Dubai airport on a lark, and this book had a great impact on my growth. There was a colleagu...
In June 2017 I finally buckled down and listened to a podcast between one of my favorites Jonathan Levi and David Allen, someone he mentioned to Chris Bailey as trying really hard to get on the pocast. What an amazing interview, the approach was simple yet profound. I had encountered GTD on a plane flight many moons ago, between 2008-2011. But I didn't think much of the book, I was enjoying 4 Hour work week, but wasn't swimming in productivity streams just yet. As I've listened to 13 interviews with Chris Bailey, the fact that GTD is still his favorite book holds some weight. However, I assumed the book might be antiquated. it is 15 years old. I can reread How to win friends, but 7 habits feels dated. Thus, I've pretty much dismissed it no matter how strong the endorsement.
But, with that change in mindset post podcast, I'm a full-fledged convert. I'm sorting out my life a bit, so waiting for the summer to actually read and reread but here is my initial take. step one write it down, step two let your brain defrag, step three review your list and assign action steps, 2 mins do it now, or prioritize and also set up someday maybe pile. The first day/night I did a mind sweep, i went to bed feeling elated. The next morning my headspace session was amazing, that sky was so blue. I didn't have distractions pop in my head, because they were already out of my head. And the one or two things I thought about, I just jotted down and back to it.
So, I'm in my infancy here but already enjoying a delightful sense of calm and connection. I was already enforcing maker/manager days so this streamlines well that I mind sweep at the end of my maker days, so I'm prepped for my manager day. I am also in the process of getting my email to Inbox only. I'm tired of archiving my life in email. I not only am purging all things digital Kondo style but have GTD to keep me on track. The strange thing is during the interview David Allen eluded that beginning GTD will prep you for the unexpected, well as a resident of Qatar the country is now facing limited exports and there is an air of uncertainty.
But, my mood is fairly optimistic and I can't let it slow me down. If anything, If someone told you, you have 48 hours to pack up your things, wouldn't that help you analyze what is truly important and start to purge the rest? What a weird blessing, I'm just happy I'm on my path to GTD Summer of 2019 will be something to savor as I reminisce about two years to GTD. The post was written June 6th.
Update: I left Qatar in a hurry early June, lost my job mid-June, and used GTD to power through.
